Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training: 5 Essentials for Your 1st Class

Are you looking for Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) training? Taking BJJ courses is an excellent way to learn self-defence. Of course, they come with many other benefits like improved mental and physical health, making BJJ one of the most popular martial arts.

Your first day of training might be a little nerve-wracking however. After all, you have no idea what to expect.

The best that you can do is to come prepared. So, here are five essentials you must carry in your gym bag.

Let’s find out what they are.

What to Bring to Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Course

Though BJJ does not require a lot of equipment, make sure to carry these essentials.

  1. Mouth Guard

As you know, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a combat sport. So, you may get hit in the face while training. This could lead to busted lips, bleeding gums, or a loose or painful tooth. If you want to prevent these unfortunate occurrences, wear a mouth guard.

It is okay to buy a boil-and-bite mouth guard online or from your local pharmacy for your initial training. However, as you advance, you will need a custom-fitting one for a more comfortable experience.

You may have some difficulty breathing when wearing a mouth guard, but this should disappear as you get used to wearing it.

  1. Rash Guard

Whether you start your training with or without a gi, you should have a good rash guard.

It goes underneath your gi to prevent burns caused by frequent contact with the mat.

Unlike T-shirts which can stretch or get soaked with sweat, rash guards are made of spandex and polyester which soaks up sweat efficiently. This prevents your gi from getting wet, allowing you to enjoy your training in relative comfort.

  1. Finger Tape

Your fingers go through a lot during BJJ training, as you are often gripping, holding, and clasping your opponent. As a result, you may end up with a finger sprain or swollen finger joint. To avoid serious finger injuries, it is best to tape your fingers before every training session.

  1. Flip Flops

Though flip-flops are not required for fighting, they are still an absolute necessity. Once you enter the gym and start training on the mat, you will have to remove your shoes. So, to roam around freely and comfortably in your free time, you wear flip-flops. Whether you go to the bathroom or changing room, they are necessary to maintain hygiene.

  1. Water Bottle

Maintaining a healthy diet is necessary during BJJ training. Make sure you have your meals an hour before you begin any training.

Also, remember to drink plenty of water on a regular basis. Carry a water bottle to the gym to keep yourself well-hydrated.

It is always best to come prepared for your first Brazilian jiu-jitsu training session as it will make you feel more confident. Now that you know what you should bring, grab your gym bag and start packing. All these essentials are important to keep you safe, hygienic, and healthy.
